The Theatre, Chipping Norton: A True Cotswolds Gem
Just a short drive from Kingham, The Theatre Chipping Norton is one of the North Cotswolds’ best-kept secrets – and a much-loved part of the local community 🎭
More than just a theatre, it’s a vibrant cultural hub, bringing together performance, film, art and community in one welcoming space.

At the Heart of the Community
The Theatre, Chipping Norton is many things at once: a theatre, arthouse cinema, gallery and concert venue. It hosts everything from professional productions and live music to children’s workshops, school performances and community events.
It’s the kind of place that quietly does it all – and does it brilliantly.
A Story Worth Knowing
The building itself has a rich history. Originally a Salvation Army Citadel dating back to 1888, it was transformed into a theatre in 1975 by two Royal Shakespeare Company actors.
Their vision was simple: create a theatre for the community, funded by the community. Locals were asked to contribute £1 each – and the response made it possible.
Over the years, the theatre has grown and evolved, expanding into neighbouring cottages and undergoing refurbishment to create improved performance and backstage spaces, while retaining its intimate and welcoming feel.

Famous for Its Pantomime
If there’s one thing The Theatre Chipping Norton is particularly known for, it’s its pantomime.
For over two decades, it has been recognised nationally as one of the very best – known for being witty, warm, topical and genuinely funny, without losing that classic family charm.
Expect all the favourites:
- Audience participation
- Sing-along moments
- Sweets thrown into the crowd
- And the occasional birthday shout-out if you ask nicely
It’s a true highlight of the festive season.

Something for Everyone
One of the theatre’s greatest strengths is its variety.
The programme is packed year-round, with:
- Live theatre and touring productions
- Independent and mainstream films
- Music performances
- Comedy and talks
There are also thoughtfully designed events such as Bambino cinema screenings for parents and young children, and relaxed screenings for those who may prefer a more informal environment.
